Tom Ford's answer to a hot summer's day is Mandarino di Amalfi, a brisk, refreshing, and aromatic citrus scent with an herbal twist. It opens with enormous brightness, as rich neroli dances with zesty lemons, black pepper, cool mint, tarragon and a dash of basil. The fragrant, slightly bitter oils from a green orange add a concentrated heft to the citrus blend, while herbal clary sage brings a shower-fresh cleanness with a lavender touch. Vetiver adds a quiet touch of woodiness to the background, and the whole thing is finished off with a floral musk. It is an opening that is simultaneously green, herbal, and clean, but Mandarino di Amalfi has a beautiful floral heart. The orange blossom slowly blooms, dropping its velvet-soft petals over the green neroli, and muffling the herbs. As the clary sage fades away, the jasmine comes out to play.
